Requirements for Art Appreciation Paper #1

This is a 1/2 page to 2 page paper.  In this paper you will write about one of the works of art from the upcoming show entitled "Reality" at the art gallery.

    (50 points ) The quality of thought. The goal of this paper is to

  • E-mail the paper either as an attachment or in the body of the e-mail.
  • You must also provide a paper version of the essay to me in class.
  • Go to the art gallery website (I may also mail the class jpg's or develop a page on my site) and chose a work from the show entitled "Reality" you have a strong reaction to.
  • write a one to two paragraph essay about this work
  • this essay may be used in a catalog in the art gallery
  • develop a powerful, original, and compelling main idea about the work
  • analyze a single work of art in depth. Your paper should be an exploration of a work of art that goes beyond what you have read in the textbook and lecture.  Your research should cause you discover something new about the work of art.
  • analyze the work using one of the three categories we regularly use in class: formal, iconographic and contextual analysis.
  • get you to relate the art you are analyzing to the primary and secondary texts used in this class.
  • teach you how to write a standard college essay.
  • teach you how to cite sources and write a research paper
  • (10 points) Spelling and Grammar.
  • Check the mechanics of your paper.  Grammar, spelling and punctuation count.  If you turn in a paper with run on sentences, poor punctuation, more than 5 spelling errors, or if you misspell the name of a major character or title, you will be marked down a full letter grade.

  • (10 points) Requirements (If any of these requirements are left out or omitted your grade will be affected substantially.)

  • The paper must be a minimum of 5 complete sentences..
  • Paper must be double spaced and typed. The largest font size you may use is 12 point use times roman font or something very simple.
  • Paper must have a heading. Cover page or folder is unacceptable.  Here's what a heading should have:

  • All titles of works should be italicized or bracketed by quotation marks.
  • Where appropriate, make sure you include the full artist/authors name, titles, and dates of any works mentioned in your essay.
  • If possible you may use additional sources please make sure to include a bibliography and use parenthetical citations.  Bibliography and citations must be in standard MLA or APA form.
  • You may use only one internet site; however, you can use use as many articles as you like from the electronic database.
  • Books, Articles from journals magazines or newspapers
  • If more than one page the paper must be stapled.  If the paper is paper clipped or unstapled or in a folder I will turn the paper back to you ungraded.
  • If you plagiarize you will have a zero averaged into your overall grade.
  • You should also have it proof read by someone else other than yourself: a friend, a teacher or by a tutor over at the Library.
  • Due the beginning of class Late papers will not be accepted you will have a zero averaged into your overall grade.
