Previewing Materials

To preview a reading means to review it BEFORE you actually read it.  By previewing the material, you get an overall idea of what the reading will be about, and what you may already know about the topic.  You can then make connections between what you know and the new material, which can help you to understand the reading better.

You can preview a reading by examining the:

  1. Title
  2. Table of Contents
  3. Preface or Introduction
  4. Author information
  5. Glossary
  6. Appendix
  7. Index
  8. Illustrations
  9. Graphs/Charts
  10. Bold faced/Italicized words
