Catalog Description: This course involves drawing the human
figure from both an anatomical and intuitively observational method.
Media used includes charcoal, graphite, ink, water color and oil wash.
Class Schedule Description: Drawing the human figure from
both an anatomical and intuitively observational method.
Course Description for Counselors: This course is required
for all Art majors whether transfer or A.A. track. One year of drawing
is recommended for all art majors desiring to transfer to the state universities
and the University of California system. One of these drawing courses
must be figure drawing. ART 107A applies to Departmental Certificate
of Course Completion in Drawing.
STUDENT MATERIALS AND MEANS OF ACHIEVING OBJECTIVES:

Student Performance Objectives: Please include performance objectives
for the lecture and laboratory components of the course.
The student will:
1. Demonstrate skill in drawing the human figure using various media.
2. Demonstrate ways of portraying the figure with increased compositional
awareness.
3. Increase perception of scale and proportion of the figure.
4. Draw the figure as portrayed and presented by contemporary artists.
5. Demonstrate vocabulary involved in critical and constructive thinking
through critiques of class work.

The study of casts & sculptures will be integrated into the course
as a way to strengthen the student’s abilities in drawing from life as
well as from memory and imagination.

Cast drawing allows a very careful study & gradual mastery of essential
drawing problems such as light & shade, construction, integration of
anatomical fact with natural forms, and the formal organization of artistic
ideas (cast are works of art).

From the hardware store:

razor blades
-
1" and 2" cheap natural bristle brushes

A tool box or a cheap tackle box for use as an art box (you can use an
old handbag, cardboard box, backpack etc.)
From Home

Rags
-
an apron or an old shirt

a ruler

3-4 bamboo barbecue skewer (the type that you use to make kabobs) (Don't
run with these)

From the art supply store:
-
compressed charcoal sticks
-
6-7 ebony pencils or 6B to 8B pencils
-
1-2 compressed graphite stick 6B to 8B
-
blending stumps
-
vine charcoal
-
a kneaded eraser
-
a gum eraser
-
1 small 8"x10" to 16"x20" sketchbooks to take notes in and to do homework
in.

18"x24" Drawing Pad ~80lb paper, (I suggest a spiral bind)
-
18x24" Charcoal Pad assorted tints or a pad of construction paper or sheets
of brown wrapping.kraft paper.

a drawing board and clips

A tentative calendar/schedule will be provided with this greensheet;
however, there will be times when the schedule will need to be adjusted.
Attendance is mandatory and attendance will be taken.

You are allowed 3 absences before it affects your class participation grade.

The 4th absence drops your "Class Participation/Attendance/Office meeting"
grade a full letter.

Each additional absence drops your "Class Participation/Attendance" grade
a half a letter.

A lateness is worth a half absence. Please note that this is significant
because it comprises 30% of your over all grade.

If you miss 4 classes
consecutively you will either fail or be dropped
from the class.
Late Work

Late work will be NOT be accepted.
-
All work is due at the beginning of the class on the day it is due.

If you are late to class the work will late and marked down a full letter
grade.
EXAMINATIONS:
There are no examinations in this course but there are quizzes which
will be based on readings from the on-line textbook and class notes.
