CATALOG DESCRIPTION:
This is a basic drawing course designed to teach students fundamental drawing skills and techniques.  Composition and presentation of subject matter, as well as a use of pencil, pen, ink and wash emphasized.

STUDENT MATERIALS AND MEANS OF ACHIEVING OBJECTIVES:

STUDENT PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES:
Upon completion of this course, the student will:
  • Demonstrate through assigned drawings basic skills in observation and surface.
  • Identify both romantic and historic references in their own work and the work of others.
  • Apply proper studio practice and technique as related to drawing media presented.
  • Identify at least four historic art styles and their impact on modern drawings.
  • Supply List

    From the hardware store:

    • razor blades
    • 1" and 2" cheap natural bristle brushes
    • A tool box or a cheap tackle box for use as an art box (you can use an old handbag, cardboard box, backpack etc.)


    From Home

    • Rags
    • an apron  or an old shirt
    • a couple of tuna cans or small tupperware containers (lids are good to have)
    • a ruler
    From the art supply store:
    • 1-2 water color or "sumi brushes"
    • or a good watercolor brush
    • 1" and 2" cheap natural bristle brushes (called chips)
    • or a 1" watercolor brush.
    • compressed charcoal sticks
    • 6-7 ebony pencils or 6B pencils
    • 1-2  compressed graphite stick 6B to 8B
    • blending stumps
    • vine charcoal
    • a kneaded eraser
    • a gum eraser
    • 18"x24" Drawing Pad ~80lb paper, (I suggest a spiral bind)
    • 18x24" Charcoal Pad assorted tints 
    • a drawing board and clips
    • a cheap set of pastels: but make sure they are not oil pastels (I like "Alphacolor" the best.)

    A tentative calendar/schedule will be provided with this greensheet; however, there will be times when the schedule will need to be adjusted.
    Attendance is mandatory and attendance will be taken.
    • You are allowed 3 absences before it affects your class participation grade.
    • The 4th absence drops your "Class Participation/Attendance/Office meeting" grade a full letter.
    • Each additional absence drops your "Class Participation/Attendance" grade a half a letter.
    • A lateness is worth a half absence.  Please note that this is significant because it comprises 30% of your over all grade.
    • If you miss 4 classes consecutively you will either fail or be dropped from the class.
    Late Work
    • Late work will be accepted,however, for every day (not every class meeting) that the assignment is late it will be marked down a full letter grade.
    • All work is due at the beginning of the class on the day it is due.
    • If you are late to class the work will late and marked down a full letter grade.
    EXAMINATIONS:
    There are no examinations in this course but there are quizzes which will be based on readings from the on-line textbook and class notes.
